Christmas Scavenger Hunt Ideas for Kids

Last year I decided to begin a new tradition with our kids, with a Christmas scavenger hunt. We have a handmade wooden advent calendar that has individual drawers for each day of December. I usually put candy in it with a sticker that they get to open up each day, but last year I felt like sprucing it up and going it an extra step! Hence, the Farley Family Christmas scavenger was born!

The best part about this is you can do it however you want!

Here is a list of sites where you can find scavenger hunt clues, so make sure to peek through and find the one that works best for you.

Step 1: Find and Print Out the Scavenger Hunt Clues

Listed above are a few options for you, but I made sure to use ones that were relevant to our home.

Step 2: Prep

This is where you will want to figure out exactly what they will be searching for. Last year I got two separate LEGO sets from Target, Christmas-themed ziplock bags, and broke each set up so that they would get a few pieces of the set each night. Disclaimer: They got frustrated because it was only a few pieces at a time, so this year I’ll be adding in other surprises along with it.

What helped was labeling the bags with the names of the kids and the day we were doing it. That helped me keep track better. I would map out how many pages of the booklet went with each bag, and honestly, it was a bit frustrating. Looking forward to having backup from other items this year.

A few other ideas besides LEGOs that you can include:

  • Books
  • Movies
  • Crafts
  • LEGOs
  • Snacks
  • Socks

The list can go on and on.

Step 3: Place the Clues Where They Belong, According to the Clue Given

A lot of the clues were self-explanatory. But what really got them excited was when I would tell them to hide in the front room while I hid the clues. Then each night, after dinner, they could open up a drawer in our calendar and read the clue!

Step 4: Sit Back and Drink Some Wine

You deserve it!

This has got to be one of my favorite traditions we do with our family now, and I can’t wait to see what other goodies I can find! Is this something you would give a go with your family? Let me know down below what your favorite Christmas tradition is!
