When I want something, I really want it RIGHT THIS SECOND. But when that product is close to $60, I get really sad and then cry until I completely forget about it. This time, I decided to take matters into my own hands and make it myself! I like to consider myself pretty crafty, and having owned a vinyl shirt business, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve. So today I am taking you along while I share how I created this custom welcome mat for under $30!!!!

Supplies:

  • Plain Welcome Mat (mine is from Target) $10
  • Paint– You always want to have more than you think
  • Paint Brushes– Sponge ones work the best
  • Stencil (I hand cut mine on my silhouette, but you can purchase one online)
  • Transfer tape
  • Optional: Vinyl cutting machine– You can order a premade stencil online, but I highly suggest investing in a machine. I use mine for everything
  • Vinyl– This is a great pack with so many different colors

Step 1: Cut Your Stencil or Buy

Collect all of your supplies; if you have hand-cut yours, you’ll want to use transfer tape to help transfer the stencil to your mat OR you can use painter’s tape to tape down the stencil you purchased. This helps keep it in place. This DIY doormat works great with your Cricut or Silhouette. Both that machines will cut a beautiful stencil.

Step 2: Place Your DIY Stencil + Paint

Once your stencil is placed where you want it, take your paint and start dabbing it onto your mat, over the stencil letters. I really pushed my paint into the mat to make sure it was dark enough. If you are using a sticky stencil, you won’t have much bleeding, but if it’s not then just be careful not to let it bleed under the stencil.

Step 3: Let Dry + Apply Second Coat

Let that coat dry a couple of hours (or overnight as I did) and apply a second coat. This one I laid on pretty thick because I wanted it nice and dark.

Step 4: Peel Off Stencil

Once that coat has dried completely, carefully peel off the stencil and discard (or wash to reuse). Finally, spray with a sealant for extra protection from being outside, and you are done!

I had SO much fun making this project and the sky is the limit when it comes to what you put on the mat. Just remember that the things you want don’t always have to be crazy expensive for them to be special. Try your hand at doing it yourself and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish. I was blown away at the price difference and yes, it’s not perfectly straight but I MADE IT! That’s pretty dang good if you ask me. For more DIY inspiration, check out my DIY Sink Scrub post.
