Looking for a way to keep your kiddos accountable for their chores and responsibilities? Not sure how to establish routines at home? I am sharing all about how to create daily routines for kids AND how to stick to them.
Kids thrive with routine. They enjoy knowing what to expect, checking off what they’ve done, and having that structure really helps to keep them on track. But what they don’t enjoy doing is being told WHAT to do. At times, when I have a routine set for my kids, they feel better when I remind them about their list, but no specifics. They go up to it and figure out what needs to be done. For more routine inspiration, here is my blissful morning routine.
At least in my head, this is how it happens. 95% of the time we struggle with keeping that momentum going. I recently found an adorable chore chart/reward system for the kids from Arrows and Applesauce and I can’t wait to share it with you. You download it and print it out, and then for the chores themselves, I laminated them individually and used velcro stickers on the back for easy application. We also bought the reward chart as well which I’m very excited to put into action. When they have completed all their responsibilities that day they get to move their little sticker through the chart. Once they have reached the end, they earn whatever it is they were working towards. And at the halfway point(it’s a two-week chart), they get an allowance.
Comment down below if you always set out with the best intentions, but end up throwing all their toys in a laundry basket and setting it on fire. Nope, just me then?
Finding a System That Works
You can give your kids 100 different chore charts and systems, but if they don’t see YOU doing what you are telling them to do, what makes them want to do it at all? I had really let grace take the reigns and stopped complaining about (mostly my daughter’s room) our kid’s rooms and actually getting down on the ground to help them. My daughter got a lot of things from me, but the cleanliness and tidying gene was seriously left out of the mix.
I do try my best to get into their rooms once a week and give it a good tidy up. I have my kiddos come in with me and help put things away, especially our oldest. Our four-year-old is a bit tricky, so I have him put books away, his cars, and make his bed. It makes them feel so proud when they’ve made their beds all on their own and I try to give them as much praise possible. Having daily routines for kids really helps to boost their confidence as well!

Responsibilities
The word chore can have a very negative connotation to it. Instead, try using the word responsibility. We have ‘Responsibility Charts’ because they are expected to be a member of the family and help out around the house. Also, when I think of the word chore it definitely does not make me want to do that task. Some of those would be:
- Putting their plates in the sink
- Picking up their dirty laundry
- Putting their toys away
- Feeding the dogs
- Making their beds
There are so many, and each family is different. What responsibilities do your kiddos have? Also, what do you do when those responsibilities are not completed? How do you handle that situation? We definitely let things pile up and then my overwhelm comes out in a not so calm way. But we are slowly figuring out what works best for us and our kiddos, and that looks totally different then everyone else.
I really hope these daily routines for kids were helpful to you with smaller kiddos. We are working on ours every day and will continue to do so! I would love to hear what you do in your home to make sure the daily responsibilities are getting done. Let me know down below!
