Does the area under your kitchen sink easily turn into a black hole? Need it to function better so you can easily find what you are looking for? These tips I use to organize underneath my kitchen sink will help to keep that area clean and organized and show you what should be stored there.

Faucet and white backdrop

This space has always been a black hole of cleaning supplies and plastic bags. I’ve never had true order and it’s a space that is utilized a lot. I needed it to work for me because I have been using it so much more now. Not only does this space hold my kitchen pipes and disposal, but it also holds my nightly sink scrub system, microfiber cloths, and plastic bags for my recyclable container. I need things not to fall out and not have to rearrange it to reach what is in the back.

I decided to tackle this space after heading to Home Goods and picking up some incredible items. But this process didn’t come along easily. There was plumbing involved and an overzealous wife who thought she could take it on. Spoiler, she couldn’t. Also, I am that wife. I had to really figure out how to work around the issue, and I’m happy to say I did. Keep reading if you’d like some easy steps to help make this space more useful.

Step 1: Access the area

Realizing what I use most and what was not needed was a big part of the process. I knew I wanted to maximize the vertical space since it doesn’t have a lot of room horizontally. I’ve got a reverse osmosis system under there from the previous owners, and I attempted to remove it, but quickly realized I am not a plumber and don’t work with pipes; who knew!! With a simple unhooking of the filter from the wall and shoving it to the very back of the cabinet, it actually opened up just enough space to make this system work.

Step 2: Shop for supplies

I headed out to Home Goods and was able to pick up everything I needed for $38!! One of the items I didn’t end up using got repurposed to another area of our home. I love that store for all kinds of organizing bins and systems. They are the same brand as The Container Store, but half the price. That’s a win in my book. But my number one tip: Shop your home first! Odds are you already have items you can be using.

Step 3: Clear it out

Take a minute and clear out the space you are working with. Take everything out and wipe down the surface area. I used a shelf liner for this because I wanted it to look prettier than the stained, warped wood that is already there. Pretty things make me feel good! Feel free to spruce up that space however you like. After, make sure to go through the items and do your best to only keep the things you truly need in there. The rest can find other homes. Don’t overwhelm yourself with unnecessary clutter.

Step 4: Move it in

Now for the fun part of getting those new items you bought placed where you want them. Sometimes this can be a puzzle, but it can also be so much fun. I love this process because this is when you really let your creative juices flow. I tried my items in several different ways, but in the end, only one of my systems worked and the other one I used someplace else. Keep your receipts so you can easily return the items you didn’t use if you choose to.

Step 5: Move things back in

Now is the time to put back the items you are keeping in the space. For me, I kept:

  • Baking Soda
  • Dish Soap
  • Vinegar
  • Sponges
  • Disinfectant Spray
  • Plastic Bags (to save space, I tie them into a knot)
  • Microfiber Cloths
  • Cleaning Gloves

The rest went elsewhere. I know for a fact that these are the items I use on a daily basis, therefore I have no room for anything else. It feels so good knowing that I have organized this space and made it work for me and my needs. No point in keeping around things that don’t matter. It also makes me happy to look at when I open the cabinet door and start my day!

I hope this helped you and gave you some ideas and clarity when it comes to organizing. What are you struggling with? I’d love to know and help in any way I can. Comment down below the area in your home you have the biggest issue with, and let’s get you some solutions!
