I want to start by saying that I am in no way a professional or even have our clutter under control most of the time. But I have found tried and true ways to help keep it under control. With my anxiety, which you can read more about in my Essential Oils for Anxiety post, I don’t do well or even function properly when there is too much clutter.
Rearranging our home happens a lot of the time because it is sometimes the only way I can deal with it in a healthy way. When I started to purge our home of all the clutter, it helped a ton. And I really hope it can help you as well. But my number one tip for success is to start small.
I’m gonna say that again. Start with the smallest area and go from there. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. You cannot successfully purge and organize a space by attempting to do it all at one time. You will burn out and give up.
Start small and go from there.
5 Easy Ways To Reduce + Maintain Clutter In Your Home
Here are a few tips when it comes to purging a space. These have really helped me out, so let me know down below which step is most helpful to you.
- Before anything else, PURGE, PURGE, PURGE
- Keep a space in your home where you can gather all the donatable items. Once a month. take them all to the donation place of your choosing. But get it out!
- Before you organize anything, make sure you have finished decluttering. There is nothing worse than buying organizing items and realizing you don’t plan on keeping half the items you had. This will save you lots of money
- YOU are the gatekeeper of your home. YOU choose what stays and what goes
Organizing Systems
In our home, bins and baskets are the best way to maintain the clutter. Recently, I purchased this awesome shelving unit that lives under our stairs and that is where the downstairs toys and upstairs clutter lives until we bring it upstairs. That way it is out of sight and still contained. The kiddos both have their own bins that they are responsible for putting away.
Upstairs, the kids both have cubicle storage in their rooms that help keep their toys concealed. They aren’t organized by bin, as it’s easier to simply throw everything in them for quick clean up. Eventually, we will get them all organized, but for now, this is what works.
Vertical Storage | Square Storage | Plastic Bins
We have a closet in the playroom that my dad and I recently installed two extra shelves into. Now the board games, barbie accessories, and things have a home and are easy to be put away.
Simple is the name of the game, people. When I overthink things, that’s when they tend to fall apart.

I do feel like I’m pretty good at purging. Especially my closet. I try to always have the rule that if I bring something new into my closet something old has to go out.
Yes! One in one out rule is crucial!!!
