People planning with markers and post-it notes

For as long as we’ve owned a home, I have wanted a good, solid command center. We have so many bills and papers that come in from the mail, plus my daughter’s school items so it just made sense. Having a central location to hold all the needed items helps keep things tidy and organized, at least that’s the goal! Today I am sharing our functional family command center with you, as well as where we chose all the items from, and give you some inspiration from other sites as well. I hope you find this helpful, and let me know if you have one or are looking to put one together. My Organized Bathroom Drawers post is packed full of even more organizing tips!

Creating a Functional Command Center

First things first, I needed to find space to add this to our home. Near the front door, there is a long blank wall that holds our shoe cabinet and our welcome table. I ended up taking the table and moving it down just a bit, removing the mirror and decor and I had the perfect spot. Make sure to measure your area before you purchase items. There is nothing worse than having to return things that you love because you thought it was going to fit. Once you know the size of the area, start getting ideas and inspiration. I use Pinterest for this and have saved all of my command center ideas to my board. Once you have a vision for the space, start shopping! This is my favorite part.

Command Center Must-Haves

After I had an idea of what I wanted, I gave myself a budget of $100. I am so happy to report that I was able to achieve that and am pleased with the items I picked up. My theme is rustic with black metal, wood, and teal accents. I actually already owned quite a bit of what I used, which really helped. That made it easier to stay on budget, so ALWAYS shop your home first.

Command Center Shopping Guide

1. Whiteboard Calendar | 2. Hanging 3 Compartment Basket | 3. Metal 2 Sided Basket

I had already had the wooden board with the glass jars and didn’t know what to use it for. Thankfully I held on to it, and now it’s perfect for holding our pens and markers for the whiteboard. When I was shopping for the calendar, I knew I needed an erasable one and I loved the color of the frame. Target had quite a few options, but I thought this one was perfect. Brooklynn enjoys “helping me” write the dates and it makes me smile when I look at her sweet handwriting.

I love the Market sign I have up there because I plan to hold our meal planning printable here as well as our daily chore charts. So I thought the wording on that sign was perfect. It is from the Target Dollar Spot, so I can’t link it, but I did offer a different option for you. The family sign is one of my favorites and I got it from Hobby Lobby a while back. The color pulls together our family gallery wall and my teal cabinet in our dining room. I do advise you to make sure however high you hang everything, to leave space for your arm to comfortably write on the calendar. I placed the black rack underneath it a little too close, so now I have to prop my arm up for the last week of the month.

Completed Command Center

This space has been working so well for us. It gives my husband a place to sort through our bills and keep important papers and mail that needs to go out. It will also be the perfect space to hold any packages we need to send out and Brooklynn has a permanent spot to hold her homework and library books. This has completely brought my vision to life and I couldn’t be happier. Which item from our functional family command center is your favorite? I would love to know down below if you are looking to create one or if this helps improve what you already use.

Here are a few other sites that have created beautiful command centers for their families. Head on over and let them know I sent you.
